This arrangement features the main theme from the second movement of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. Tchaikovsky began drafting this symphony in 1876, but the turmoil of a failed marriage made it impossible for him to continue. When he was able to resume composing in 1877, he took up the work and completed it in January, 1878. The work as a whole is a restless and tempestuous one, reflecting Tchaikovsky's chaotic and dispirited state of mind. The melody, while pleasant and lyrical, is imbued with a certain melancholy, reflecting the sadness in his life.
